Dutch ambassador: Organization of COP29 in Azerbaijan rises interest of several more partners in that event

The Dutch climate envoy Jaime de Bourbon and water envoy Meike van Ginneken will pay an official visit to Azerbaijan in the coming months.

In a conversation with Report, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Azerbaijan Pauline Eizema, mentioned that their visit is to explore the opportunities within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Eizema mentioned that the COP29 conference offers new opportunities: "COP29 covers issues such as water, agriculture, and climate change. After the announcement that COP29 will be held in Azerbaijan this year, the interest of several more partners in this event has increased."

The COP conference, which is hosted by a different country every year, will be held in Baku this year from November 11 to 24. COP29 is considered a historic meeting to accelerate climate action and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Azerbaijan has joined the fight against global climate change as a party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The country aims to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases by 35% by 2030 compared to 1990. A more ambitious target of reducing the amount of greenhouse gases by 40% by 2050 has been set for a period after 2030.

The President of Azerbaijan declared the liberated lands a "Green Energy" zone. The plan is to turn these areas into the "Net zero emission" zones by 2050.
