The process of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources should be accelerated, David Tong, a representative of the NGO Oil Change International, said at today's press conference at COP29 in Baku, Report informs.
He noted that the transition from fossil fuels is already included in the text of the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) document, however, the process needs acceleration.
"The climate mitigation plan lacks ambitious goals. We see completely different positions reflected in other key negotiation documents, which causes our concern," he emphasized.
Tong reminded that the global decision made at last year's conference in Dubai includes tripling the use of renewable energy sources, doubling energy efficiency, and phasing out fossil fuels in energy systems.
"This process was completed last year and is not subject to revision under the Paris Agreement," he added.
The expert noted that the need to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy systems is evident, despite challenges and differences in parties' positions.
