The Declaration on green digital activity, adopted at COP29, offers Caribbean countries and other small island states vital tools to protect their communities, economies, and environments while building resilience against the growing impact of climate change, Rodney Taylor, Secretary General of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), said.
According to Report, speaking at a high-level roundtable on green digital activity during COP29, Taylor emphasized that small island states fully support the declaration.
He said the developing small island states are directly exposed to the devastating effects of climate change.
Extreme weather conditions hinder countries' social and economic development, with billions of dollars spent annually on infrastructure restoration, Taylor said.
He added that this declaration provides an opportunity for integrating digital technologies into climate adaptation strategies.
According to the CTU chief, by enhancing digital literacy, developing small island states can leverage technology for data-driven decision-making against emerging threats.
He said global knowledge sharing and collaboration further strengthen the implementation of best practices and innovative strategies tailored to the needs of developing small island states.
