Crown Prince: Kuwait aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060

Kuwait aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, Kuwait's Crown Prince Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah said at the leaders summit at the COP29 climate conference in Baku on November 13, Report informs.

"Climate change is a global problem that has become a threat to many countries, including Kuwait. The effects of climate change are becoming more noticeable and are accelerating due to rising temperatures, dust storms, and lack of precipitation, which now directly affect daily life in our country. Based on this, Kuwait confirms its commitment to environmental sustainability and fulfilling its obligations under the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. For this, we are implementing a number of national projects and measures," said the Crown Prince.

According to him, Kuwait calls on developed countries to fulfill their framework convention obligations and provide financial and technical support to least developed countries so they have the necessary capacity for further work.

"Then they will be able to resist and adapt to the effects of climate change, as well as fulfill their nationally determined contributions. Kuwait, through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, is making every possible effort to help developing countries worldwide. We provide loans and grants totaling 27 billion US dollars in this regard," he noted.

The Crown Prince emphasized that Kuwait has created an economic development model for the period until 2050, which is based on low greenhouse gas emissions.

"The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. For this, we are implementing a number of strategic projects to reduce carbon emissions across all sectors. Priority attention is given to clean energy projects. Additionally, we aim to ensure solar energy's share in the energy balance at 50% by 2050. In this regard, we will implement new low-carbon technologies and develop long-term partnerships to utilize all sustainable energy opportunities," he added.

He noted that Kuwait expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2040. The Crown Prince also expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for the good organization of the COP29 climate conference.
