COP29 Digitalization Day: Baku discusses role of digital technologies in combating climate crisis

For the first time, COP29 has organized a thematic Digitalization Day to highlight the significant role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in combating climate change, Report informs.

The day's main event was the signing of the Declaration on the Green Digital Action Plan, which was supported by more than 1,000 representatives of the digital technology community from over 90 countries.

The new plan envisions widespread use of digital technologies in fighting the climate crisis, which will help improve infrastructure resilience and reduce carbon footprint. Speaking at a press conference dedicated to Digitalization Day, Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev shared Azerbaijan's achievements in this field.

He noted that one of the key projects was creating a digital twin of Baku, which uses data from transport systems and mobile devices to reduce emissions and improve air quality in the capital. Nabiyev noted that digitalization is important not only for environmental protection but also for improving urban infrastructure efficiency. The press conference also featured speeches by COP29 Deputy Lead Negotiator Samir Bezhanov, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas, and other officials.

As part of Digitalization Day, a panel discussion was organized on using AI technologies in climate action. Representatives of the UN Technology Executive Committee emphasized that AI can significantly accelerate the search for climate solutions, providing data for timely prediction of climate disasters and optimizing resource use.

The new AI for Climate Action initiative has already received positive feedback and support from participants. "Including digitalization in the climate agenda opens new opportunities for accelerating the transition to a sustainable future. We are grateful for the support from participants and plan to strengthen work in this direction towards COP30 in Belém, Brazil," noted Tomas Lamanauskas.
