Committee chairman: Green Building Roadmap for Azerbaijan under development

State Committee of Azerbaijan for Urban Planning and Architecture in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation is developing a Green Building Roadmap for Azerbaijan, the Committee Chairman Anar Guliyev told a COP29 Ministerial Meeting on Urbanisation and Climate Change, Report informs.

According to Guliyev, the construction industry is the cornerstone of economic development:

"It provides infrastructure, housing, and urban spaces that sustain and elevate our societies. However, we must also acknowledge that the sector is one of the largest contributors to global carbon emissions, resource depletion, and environmental degradation. In Azerbaijan, as in many parts of the world, the construction industry has long been a powerful engine of economic growth. It has created jobs, stimulated innovation, and significantly contributed to improving the quality of life for our citizens. Yet, with this growth comes an immense responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of our buildings and infrastructure."

The Chairman of the State Committee stated that the negative impacts of climate change require fundamental changes in urban construction:

"We must adopt greener, more sustainable construction practices and prioritize energy efficiency in buildings. In this context, I am pleased to announce our ongoing collaboration with the International Finance Corporation to develop a Green Building Roadmap for Azerbaijan. This roadmap represents a critical step in integrating sustainability into our urban development processes."
