The transport sector is not progressing on the path of decarbonization in accordance with Paris Agreement commitments, Chile's Minister of Transport Juan Carlos Munoz stated during the High-Level Roundtable on Green Urban Transport at the Climate and Urbanization Ministers Meeting within COP29, Report informs.
"Transport is a crucial sector in fighting climate change. It accounts for 23% of global carbon emissions. Unfortunately, this sector is not progressing on the path of decarbonization in accordance with Paris Agreement commitments. Although 84% of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) mention transport-related measures, their scope and details vary greatly. This inconsistency creates serious gaps. I am pleased to announce a new guide on integrating transport into nationally determined contributions prepared by the ITF Secretariat to address this," said Chile's transport minister.
According to Munoz, this guide is an important resource and will play a significant role in how the approach to transport will be implemented in future NDCs: "This document is not prescriptive. Instead, it offers a comprehensive framework that governments can use and adapt according to their national circumstances, paths, and approaches. Each country has its unique challenges, capabilities, and priorities, and NDCs should reflect this diversity while aligning with the overall objectives of the Paris Agreement."
