Antigua and Barbuda PM: Global North should compensate us - Exclusive

The Global South expects increased funding and higher ambitions in emissions reduction, which will be the only acceptable outcome of the COP29 conference for island communities, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, said in an interview with Report.

Prime Minister Browne called for decisive action in fighting the climate crisis, emphasizing that Global North countries must compensate for the damage they have caused to the planet.

According to him, the only acceptable outcome of the COP29 conference will be an agreement on additional funding and an accelerated transition to renewable energy sources to protect the planet and combat climate change.

"We hope that funding will be increased and ambitions in emissions reduction will be raised. We also expect a final agreement that will allocate more resources to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, reduce emissions, and protect the planet. Any result below these expectations will be considered a failure. The Global North primarily created the problem, and we insist on climate justice, demanding compensation so that we can adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change," emphasized Gaston Browne.
