The significant shallowing of the Caspian Sea is associated with climate change and anthropogenic factors, Iran's Assistant Foreign Minister for Caspian Sea Affairs Alireza Jahangiri said at an event "Caspian Sea Water Decline in light of climate change", held at Azerbaijan's pavilion during COP29, Report informs.
He noted that this poses a threat to marine flora and fauna, as well as the socio-economic development of coastal territories, having significant consequences for the population.
"The continued decline in sea level at the current rate could have devastating consequences and lead to an ecological crisis, including the drying up of small bays and wetlands," he said.
In conclusion, Jahangiri noted that using international experience in controlling water level fluctuations and reviving wetlands and lakes, as well as ensuring the livelihood of coastal populations, should be a priority in matters of regional cooperation between countries.
