Cities worldwide can significantly reduce methane emissions and contribute to keeping global warming at 1.5°C by committing to process 70% of organic waste by 2030, Aguilera Camila, consultant for Latin America and the Caribbean at the GAIA consulting center, told Report.
According to her, zero-waste strategies, such as source separation of waste and organic waste processing, can reduce methane emissions from solid waste by up to 95%.
"These approaches can also serve as a foundation for creating environmentally friendly jobs, supporting local farmers, and expanding opportunities for waste collectors and waste processing workers, ensuring a fair and sustainable transition. We call on city leaders to join this movement to build sustainable communities and achieve long-term results," emphasized Camila.
