ADSEA: Sustainability at core of Azerbaijan’s approach to water management

Sustainability is at the core of Azerbaijan's approach to water resource management, Asad Shirinov, advisor to the chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA), said at the event "Innovative Approaches to Sustainable Water. Resource Management" within COP29, Report informs.

He noted that the worsening water scarcity problem due to climate change demonstrates the importance of integrating sustainable development principles into all aspects of the country's water policy: "This approach aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6 on ensuring drinking water supply and sanitation services, and SDG 13 on combating climate change, which demonstrates our commitment to meeting current needs without compromising future generations. This is also reflected in Azerbaijan's recently developed National Water Strategy."

Shirinov provided detailed information about implemented projects and steps toward modernizing water management in Azerbaijan, noting that alternative water sources have become an important part of Azerbaijan's water strategy in the face of growing climate challenges.

He reminded that Azerbaijan has built modern reservoirs in liberated territories and restored basic water infrastructure to counter the impacts of climate change.

Azerbaijan recognizes the importance of international cooperation and climate financing to achieve its goals, Shirinov added.
