Toyota becomes world leader in car sales last year

The leading Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor sold more than 9.53 million cars worldwide in the calendar year 2020, becoming the leader in this indicator among other companies, Report states, citing the document provided by Toyota Motor.

Moreover, global sales, including those of the Toyota group of manufacturers Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, fell in 2020 by 11.3% compared to 2019. However, the main competitor of the Japanese concern - Volkswagen -sold about 9.3 million cars during the same period, which brought the Japanese corporation to the world leaders. The last time Toyota topped this ranking was in 2015.

Despite the negative impact of the pandemic and the suspension of factories, Toyota Motor increased production to a record level in its history, mainly due to increased demand in China, which is experiencing a faster post-pandemic recovery than other countries.

Toyota's sales were the least affected in Europe compared to other regions of the world. The Japanese concern sold about 960,000 cars in European countries, a drop of 8.5% from 2019.
