Colombian Embassy in Azerbaijan carries out documentary screening, exhibition on Colombia's Biodiversity

Within the framework of the “Plan for the Promotion of Colombia Abroad”, the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in the Republic of Azerbaijan held the screening of the documentary of the Colombia Bio series, “Everything is a Fragment”, and the exhibition of illustrations of the Bank of the Republic of Colombia: Long live the Butterflies!

The event was addressed to the representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, the Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, and the directors, docents, and students of the Faculty of Biology of the Baku State University.

Among the guests were also Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Azerbaijan, authorities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, representatives of the National Library, the Chess Federation, and the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Agency (AZPROMO).

Likewise, some participants of the Program "Dissemination of Colombian culture through the teaching of Spanish" that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia and the Presidential Agency for Cooperation - APC offer to Azerbaijani public officials and diplomats, and the participants of the virtual courses "Basic Diploma in Drug Control" and "Strategies against Drug Trafficking in Maritime and Air Terminals" offered by the Anti-Drug School of the Colombian National Police to officials of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Azerbaijan, were also present at the activity.

The Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Colombian Embassy in Azerbaijan, Ms. María Angélica Steer Varela, opened the event, welcoming the distinguished guests and highlighted that Colombia tops the list of the most biodiverse countries in the world because it has more than 58,000 species of flora and fauna registered, is one of the largest reserves of freshwater and tropical forest on the planet, and has two large windows to the world: the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The country has the largest number of birds and orchids globally.

The diplomat also stated that: “Colombia is one of the leading destinations for butterfly species. The figures prove it, Colombia is officially one of the countries with the most species of butterflies, since one in five lives in our country. In other words, 20 percent of the planet's butterflies live in our territory”.The documentary "Everything is a Fragment", by Director Carlos Osuna was filmed in some towns located in the Cauca region in Colombia and builds a story where the voices of its inhabitants, sometimes full of despair are mixing with the sounds and the exuberance of nature.The photo exhibition Long live the Butterflies! brings together Catalina Londoño Carder's scientific illustrations, shows the variety of butterfly species in Colombia, explains where they live and how they reproduce and invites to conserve forests, glens, and scrublands.

The event, received with great interest by the participants, highlighted the importance of butterflies for ecosystems and for science.The Plan for the Promotion of Colombia Abroad is a cultural diplomacy tool of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, whose purpose is to support the achievement of the foreign policy objectives of the Colombian State.
