The execution of the terrorist who attacked Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran, Iran's capital, has been delayed for nearly a year. The attacker was arrested and sentenced to death by the court on October 2, 2023. However, though almost a year has passed, it remains unclear when the execution will be carried out. This incident, which has consistently been in the spotlight of Azerbaijani society, is also closely monitored by the media.
According to information obtained by Report from diplomatic sources, if the decision regarding the execution is not implemented soon, Azerbaijan may recall its ambassador from Iran once again.
So, why is the implementation of this decision being delayed? Our investigation has revealed several possibilities. For instance, if we look at the life journey of Yasin Huseynzade, the Iranian citizen who carried out the terror attack, several interesting points come to light.
Yasin Huseynzade, 55, joined the ranks of IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) during the Iran-Iraq War. He participated in the war as part of the 31st Ashura Division for a short period of time. Until 1999, he worked as a truck driver at the IRGC headquarters in Tabriz and then retired from there. From 1999 to 2006, Yasin served as the commander of the Basij forces affiliated with the Yaldur Mosque in Marand. He still maintains his connection with that Basij base. There is even information that he participated in the suppression of anti-government protests that took place in Bukan and Maragheh in recent months, alongside the Basij and IRGC forces in Tabriz.
It is highly likely that his membership in the IRGC is preventing the execution of this terrorist who killed an innocent person and wounded two others. This organization is hindering the implementation of his execution. However, speaking about this heinous crime, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov reiterated the position of official Baku in January of this year and stated that the embassy can resume its activities under two conditions: the criminal must receive his deserved punishment, and Iran must fully guarantee the security of the embassy staff.
On January 27, 2023, an armed person with a Kalashnikov rifle attacked the Azerbaijani embassy, killing the head of the security service and wounding two other people. Surprisingly, police officers were last to arrive at the scene.
