Deputy minister: Azerbaijan planning to introduce modern irrigation systems on 150,000 hectares

It is necessary to apply innovative technologies for saving water resources in Azerbaijan's agriculture, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sarvan Jafarov said at the opening ceremony of Azerbaijan International Agriculture Caspian Agro and 29th Azerbaijan International Food Industry InterFood Azerbaijan exhibitions, Report informs.

He emphasized that as one of the successful adaptation programs implemented in the field of agriculture, the high productivity indicators obtained within the framework of the implementation of the President's Decree "On a number of measures to increase the level of self-sufficiency with wheat" dated July 19, 2022, will indirectly ensure food security, serves as a new tool in promoting the implementation of modern irrigation systems. He said that the future goal of the program is to implement modern irrigation systems on 150,000 hectares in the country.

“Recently, amid global climate changes and the increase in water demand in the country, regular measures have been taken and are being taken in terms of efficient use of water resources. This includes the President's Decrees of April 8, 2024 on the reconstruction of the Shirvan irrigation canal, and the Presidential Decrees of April 15, 2024 on the reconstruction of the Karabakh irrigation canal. Imagine that these orders will provide more than 227,000 hectares of agricultural land in 16 regions of the country with irrigation water and domestic water for residential areas, and will allow to use irrigation water more efficiently and economically,” Sarvan Jafarov said.
