Azerbaijani Minister: Climate-friendly agriculture to be specially addressed at COP29

COP29 will feature a special focus on climate change and climate-friendly agriculture during the Food, Agriculture and Water Day on November 19, Azerbaijan's Minister of Agriculture, Majnun Mammadov said on the second day of the Baku Climate Action Week, Report informs.

The minister emphasized that the Baku Harmoniya Climate Initiative for Farmers was established specifically to support adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector.

"This initiative will act as an aggregator, bringing together existing initiatives, coalitions, and networks related to agriculture, food, and water," stated Mammadov. "Our goal is to facilitate the exchange of experiences, identify synergies and gaps, streamline climate financing opportunities, and promote collaboration with local communities, especially empowering women in rural areas."

Mammadov further highlighted the crucial role the initiative will play in the sustainable development of agriculture and the fight against climate change, both locally and globally. "One of the main objectives of this initiative is to empower rural communities and make them more resilient to climate change," he added.

The minister also pointed out, “To achieve this goal, close cooperation with international organizations and multilateral development banks is essential, as well as providing local farmers with climate-smart technologies and knowledge. The Baku Harmoniya Climate Initiative for Farmers, which is of particular importance for Azerbaijan, is expected to make a significant contribution to the implementation of climate-friendly agricultural technologies in the country.”
