In Azerbaijan, authorities are planning to provide compensation to farmers for crops destroyed by pests, by Elkhan Mikayilov, Advisor to the Chairman of the Food Safety Agency, said during discussions on the draft of the new edition of the law “On Phytosanitary Measures," according to Report.
"A commission is expected to be established that will document the destroyed crops and assess the damage. We are currently awaiting reviews of this proposal by the Ministries of Finance and Economy," Mikayilov stated.
He added that in the European Union, such losses are covered through a special fund, and a similar mechanism could be implemented in Azerbaijan.
The agency representative also noted that the new draft law defines the legal framework for phytosanitary control and regulates the relationships between stakeholders in this field.
"The draft law proposes creating a list of particularly dangerous organisms to ensure ongoing control measures. If quarantine measures prove ineffective, the destruction of infected plants is foreseen," Mikayilov emphasized.
